Virginia Key to Fisher Island Sanitary Sewer Replacement

The Virginia Key to Fisher Island Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project represents one of David Mancini & Sons, Inc. (DMSI)’s most technically demanding and environmentally critical undertakings — designed to upgrade aging sewer infrastructure and ensure long-term service reliability for Miami-Dade County’s coastal communities.

The project involved the installation of a new 60-inch sanitary sewer main, replacing the existing 54-inch pipeline extending from Virginia Key to Fisher Island. This complex effort combined multiple advanced construction techniques to navigate challenging subsurface and marine conditions while maintaining active wastewater service.

Key components included approximately 5,300 linear feet of pre-cast concrete segmental tunnel, 2,700 linear feet of 60-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP), and 1,000 linear feet of 8-inch horizontal directional drilled pipeline. Additionally, DMSI managed the decommissioning of 9,500 linear feet of existing PCCP sewer, including cutting, purging, and plugging procedures in compliance with all environmental and safety regulations.

Ancillary work included temporary bypass systems, precision tapping and tie-in connections, and installation of supporting piping and valves — all coordinated under strict control to maintain continuous sewer service throughout the transition period.

The objectives are to streamline processes, maximize resource utilization, and deliver measurable outcomes that create long-term value. By leveraging our technical skills, proven experience, and commitment to excellence, we aim to not only meet but exceed expectations. Communication and transparency will remain at the core of the project, fostering trust and alignment at every step.

Ultimately, this project represents an opportunity to showcase our capabilities while building a foundation for sustained success and future growth.

This project underscores DMSI’s ability to execute large-diameter wastewater transmission and tunneling projects in marine and urban environments. Through advanced tunneling technology, HDD precision, and seamless utility transition, DMSI successfully delivered a durable, high-capacity sewer main that strengthens Miami-Dade County’s critical infrastructure network and safeguards the surrounding ecosystem.
